Teaching Language Through a Critical Sociolinguistic Lens: Examples from Spanish.

Free AATSP Nor Cal Zoom Social Justice and Language Teaching Workshop

May 22, 2023 - 4:00 - 5:00 PM

Dear AATSP Nor Cal Members,

We would like to extend an invitation for you to join us via Zoom on Monday May 22 from 4-5pm Pacific Time for the interactive workshop

Teaching Language Through a Critical Sociolinguistic Lens: Examples from Spanish.

The worshop is free for AATSP Norcal members and will be given by Dr. Rebecca Pozzi, Dr. Tracy Quan, and Dr. Chelsea Escalante.

Workshop Description

Aligning with calls for social justice in world language pedagogy, this workshop discusses a model for teaching language that is descriptive rather than prescriptive, critical rather than apolitical, and translingual rather than monolingual. Justifications for such an approach are described, alongside examples from Spanish classes across various levels.

When: Monday May 22 4-5pm Pacific Time

Where: Zoom https://csumb.zoom.us/j/4727439197 Press Here

We look forward to seeing you then!

Abstract

World language departments, curricula, and teaching materials often prioritize standardized, academic language forms, typically spoken by middle and upper class, educated native speakers (e.g., Burns, 2018). As language educators, we are socialized to teach language norms, to emphasize proficiency outcomes, and to immerse our students in target language-only bubbles. Such an approach is reductive and dangerous for all, but especially for speakers of minoritized and racialized backgrounds, because it reaffirms hierarchies that denigrate multilingual practices (e.g., translanguaging), sociolinguistic variation, and linguistic innovations (e.g., inclusive language). Aligning with ongoing calls for social justice in world language pedagogy (Macedo, 2019; Randolph & Johnson, 2017), this workshop discusses a model for teaching language that is descriptive rather than prescriptive, critical rather than apolitical, and translingual rather than monolingual. First, we define what teaching language through a critical sociolinguistic lens means. Second, we explain why such an approach is crucial in higher education and beyond. Third, we provide concrete pedagogical examples from Spanish to highlight how such an approach can be integrated across levels.
